TOOBEE IN THE NEWS

After several Chinese toy recalls, will American makers come back?
Sussex manufacturer hopes consumers will make new choice.

Sussex, WI - Greg Stromberg believes in American toy makers.

For more than 30 years, he has locally manufactured the Toobee, a hollow half-soda can that’s thrown like a football and flies like a Frisbee.

Stromberg said he’s resisted the urge to have his product made in China, even though he estimates doing so would reduce the cost of each toy, which sells for $14.95, by up to 50 percent.

Stromberg said the recent spat of recalls of Chinese-made toys has been a long time coming and he hopes American consumers will spend their dollar on American-made toys.

"I definitely think consumers are going to change their buying pattern," Stromberg said. "It’s all based on trust and value and when the trust breaks down, so does the business."

A wave of Chinese toy recalls this summer related to lead paint, including 1.5 million various Thomas & Friends wooden railway cars distributed by Oak Brook Ill.-based RC2 Corp., has some in the toy industry predicting a boon this holiday season for American toy makers.

Rhonda Nelson, owner of Think, Play, Learn in the town of Oconomowoc, said a shortage is starting as many toy stores are stocking up on American-made and speciality toys for the holiday season.

"The problem is people are looking more for specialty toys and we are going to run out," Nelson said. "People are flocking more to these toys because they don’t have to worry about them."

But Frank Clark, a spokesman for Toy Industry Association Inc., a trade group that represents toy makers, said the actual effect the Chinese-made toy recalls will have on the consumer is still unknown.

The Associated Press reports 80 percent of all toys sold in the United States are made in China. Clark said consumers will have few choices if they choose to only buy American.

"It’s likely that people are going to look for the quality brand names they trust," Clark said. "Countries don’t make products, companies do."

American-Made Toy is Safe, Fun and Making a Difference

MILWAUKEE, WI /PR Newswire/ -- Looking for a toy that is American-Made, safe for kids, environment-friendly and fun to play with. Say hello to Toobee, the Amazing Flying Can. Across the globe, this aerodynamic wonder is being called, "The Hottest item Since the Frisbee(R)."

Designed by two aeronautical engineers, the patented high-tech aluminum airfoil is only .005 inches thick and weighs less than 3 grams.

Toobee can be tossed for distance, accuracy, fun, or competition. Just grip it and throw Toobee with a spin like a football. Watch as it sails, soars, swoops, and curves. The world distance record is 283 feet -- not bad for something that weighs less than a marshmallow.

The toy is designed for ages 6 to 106 and can be played alone, with the family, or with a group of friends. It has no sharp edges and is safe indoors or out.

Major league baseball pitchers experimenting with Toobee soon learned to throw "curveballs" and controlled pitches, almost as if it were a baseball. In June of 2007, Toobee was used as part of the Keynote address for eBay Live held in Boston. The event was a huge success.

In contrast to many toys on the market today, Toobee is made in the USA. It is 100% recyclable making it a "green toy," and comes with a lifetime guarantee.

There is also a Toobee Air Force, with its own Official Toobee branded merchandise, a Flight Training Manual and the motto, "Success comes with CANS." In the works is a kid-centric Toobee's guide to life featuring positive and inspirational content.

Greg Stromberg, President of Toobee International said about Toobee, "It's a toy that turns heads and creates good, clean fun wherever it goes. It brings people together. And is the perfect cure for sedentary lifestyles." "Ultimately, I want Toobee to be able to make a difference in society. To bring about positive change," Stromberg added. In keeping with that goal, 20% of all profits go to select children's charities worldwide.

At present time, Toobee is available via the Internet, and mail order. A 2-pack with protective storage/carry case is just $14.95.

Will Toobee®, the Amazing Flying Can be the next fad craze

to swoop the nation?

Chris Stromberg is convinced it will. He is the Milwaukee-based manufacturer and promoter of Toobee, the Amazing Flying Can, hailed as the “hottest item since the Frisbee®.

Toobee was invented in Berkeley, California by Dale Klahn and Gary Upham both of whom hold advanced degrees in aeronautical and nuclear engineering.

To the uninitiated, it appears to be nothing more than the top third of a beer or soda can. But to those in the know, it’s the Toobee, a cylindrical wing or annular airfoil that seems to defy gravity. The Toobee pilot simply grips the can like a football and throws it, rounded edge forward, like an NFL long bomb. When thrown properly, Toobee will sail, soar, swoop and curve floating on air for distances almost the length of the football field. Stromberg says, "Because there is very little drag on the thin aluminum, it keeps spinning at a high rate during flight. As momentum dies down, torque from gravity causes Toobee to swoop off in the direction of spin."

The patented high-tech aluminum airfoil is only .005 inches thick and weighs less than a marshmallow (3 grams). The world record to date is an astounding 283 feet, (91 yards). That's just six yards short of a football field.

Extreme lightness and specially rolled edges, make Toobee a safe toy that can be flown safely indoors or out. Toss it for distance, accuracy for fun or competition.– – Major league baseball pitchers experimenting with Toobee soon learned to throw “curveballs” and controlled pitches, almost as if it were a baseball.

Toobee contests and competitions continue to turn heads. There is even talk of a global Toobee olympics. Stromberg added, "It's a fun toy that turns heads and creates good clean fun wherever it goes."

Yes, there is even a Toobee Air Force, with its own Official Toobee Air Force Flight Training Manual and the motto --"Success comes with CANS."

At present time, Toobee is available via the internet and mail order. You can get a 3-pack for around $15 and is good clean fun for everyone (Ages 6-106). The perfect gift for any occasion or for that person who has everything.

In keeping with Toobee's efforts to make a difference in society, 20% of all profits go to select children's charities worldwide.

Toobee International® Selects Echopinion to Launch
Word of Mouth Campaign

Echopinion, a word of mouth marketing and research firm, was selected by Toobee® International to direct a 12-week word of mouth campaign involving volunteer consumers across the nation. Toobee International is the owner and manufacturer of Toobee -- The Amazing Flying Can -- a circular piece of aluminum that sails through the air like a bee."I've relied on word of mouth for promoting the Toobee since its inception. I think it's a reality check for how good your product really is," said Greg Stromberg, owner/manager of Toobee International. "I used to give a lot of these away. I knew if people played with them they would have fun. And although there was some success at starting the Toobee trend, I wasn't able to find out what was happening when that consumer shared the Toobee with others," said Stromberg. "Echopinion makes it possible for me to obtain that information -- real time, honest feedback, via a truly organized, innovative and measurable approach.""Echopinion also satisfies my need for lean sales and marketing allowing me to keep Toobee International's main goal in place -- generating funds and awareness for children's charities," added Stromberg.Echopinion, a national word of mouth marketing and research firm located in Syracuse NY, incorporates word of mouth marketing to help companies develop and launch consumer products. Toobee Fad Zooms On

By Bridget White

“We’ve been giving away a lot of Toobees because we know if people play with them they are going to have fun.” — Gregory Stromberg, Toobee International
What looks like a piece of scrap metal but sails through the air like a deranged Frisbee? It’s called Toobee, The Amazing Flying Can — a circular piece of aluminum that its manufacturer describes as “the longest-going unknown fad in the world.” And though Toobee is still a niche product, its motto, mission and contagion aim to carry it far.

Gregory Stromberg, owner/manager of Toobee International (ToyShow), explained to TDmonthly Magazine why the product has such appeal: “Nothing flies like it. It weighs less than three grams, so if you throw it with the wind, it will keep going forever because it’s as light as a piece of paper. It bounces off air currents and does all kinds of funny things. It actually looks like it’s moving in slow motion.”

With a maximum soaring distance of almost 100 yards and a stable full of tricks, Toobee has developed a loyal fan base. Stromberg said he often receives emails from people who have had their Toobee for 30 years or more and are happy to see the company still in business.

Toobee was developed by two engineers about 35 years ago in Santa Barbara, Calif. Aeronautical engineer Dale Klahn was fascinated by airfoils and wanted to develop a perfect one. His search ultimately led to aluminum cans; the material is flexible, sturdy and lightweight, and the width back then (2-11/16”) was perfect. When Klahn cut a cross-section out of an aluminum can and curled back the edges, the Toobee was born.

“Initially, he was using recycled cans,” Stromberg told TDmonthly, “but then he went to the can company and had them produce virgin cans.”

Stromberg, who used to work in the can industry, acquired the rights to the product a few years later and has been manufacturing and selling Toobee ever since. Stromberg believes in his product so strongly that he relies exclusively on word of mouth to generate sales.

“We tried some advertising,” Stromberg said, “but that was very expensive, and we’ve decided we’re going to put the emphasis on the product quality and word of mouth. We’ve been giving away a lot of Toobees, because we know if people play with them they are going to have fun.” Stromberg donates 20 percent of all profits to children’s charities (currently UNICEF), and said the company plans to fly around the world to promote world peace by bringing people together. They even have a positive motto: “Success comes in cans; failure comes in can nots.”

Currently, Toobee is exclusively sold through the company’s website, but Stromberg is open to partnerships and opportunities that allow for a good margin and continue the company’s purpose.
